User research revealed that pet owners often struggle to manage their pets’ medical, legal, and care-related records. Most rely on physical folders provided by veterinarians, which can be easily misplaced, damaged, or become disorganised. While some attempt to digitise records by taking photos, without a structured system, retrieving specific documents remains time-consuming and frustrating. This lack of organisation can lead to missed vaccinations, forgotten prescriptions, and unnecessary stress for pet owners.

To better understand how pet owners manage their pets' medical, legal, and care-related records, user interviews were conducted with pet owners and existing document storage behaviours were analysed. The research aimed to uncover pain points, common habits, and potential opportunities for a more streamlined digital solution.

initial wireframes

After refining the user flow based on mentor feedback, initial digital wireframes were created.

In this iteration, the user is asked to add a new document, one of the main features of the app. By asking the user to do this during onboarding, the user gets to see the benefits of using the app straight away, as well as understanding how to use the feature early on. Including this before asking the user to sign up can reduce drop-off during onboarding, and improve user understanding and satisfaction.

After refining the onboarding process, the next stage involved creating mid-fidelity mock-ups, integrating colour, icons, copy, and a logo. This phase focused on higher-level design considerations, such as visual hierarchy and page layouts, to ensure an intuitive user experience.

Particular attention was given to how users interact with key components on each screen. For example, on the files page, recent documents were prioritised for quick access, reducing the time spent searching for important records.

At this stage, the user flows were largely complete, and high-fidelity mock-ups focused on refining visual and interactive elements to align with Apple's Design Guidelines (ADGs).

Special attention was given to navigation bar, ADGs material design principles, and keyboard interactions to create a seamless and intuitive experience.

The navigation bar was designed following Apple’s Human Interface Guidelines, ensuring consistency with native iOS applications. This included appropriate spacing, iconography, and adherence to accessibility standards.

The final design of PetDoc addressed the core problem of disorganised pet healthcare records by providing an intuitive, AI-powered system for document management. Through research and iterative design, the app evolved to include smart sorting, automated reminders, and structured categorisation, making it easier for pet owners to store and retrieve important records. The design process focused on creating a seamless and familiar user experience, aligning with Apple’s Human Interface Guidelines to ensure accessibility and ease of use.

As a junior designer, this project reinforced my ability to conduct independent research, apply UX principles, and refine designs through iteration. I deepened my understanding of information architecture, Apple’s Human Interface Guidelines, and visual hierarchy.

One of my biggest takeaways was the importance of balancing aesthetic and functional design—while visuals enhance engagement, clarity in organisation and usability ultimately determine a product’s success. Additionally, I improved my ability to work within platform-specific guidelines, ensuring that designs feel intuitive within an existing ecosystem.

Looking back, I would have liked to incorporate more user validation, whether through informal surveys or prototype walkthroughs, to gain direct feedback on the design decisions.

Given more time, I would further refine the AI-powered document categorisation by exploring machine learning approaches.

Other potential improvements include multi-pet profiles for households with multiple pets, or a shared access feature for family members or pet sitters.

This project strengthened my ability to approach problem-solving through design thinking, and I look forward to building on these skills in future projects.
